New Jersey rules against the movie theater owners who have claimed that shutting down theaters infringe on their right to free speech.
New Jersey will not be reopening movie theaters any time in the near future. COVID-19 caused movie theaters worldwide to close their doors. Many films postponed their release dates to the latter half of 2020 and 2021 or released directly to streaming platforms. Movie theaters in the tri-state area closed around mid-March. New Jersey had some of the highest cases in the country, but after strict social distancing and stay-at-home guidelines were enforced by Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey is 1 of only 15 states on the mend.
According to The Wrap, despite New Jersey's improving conditions, movie theaters will not be reopening yet. A recent hearing held on August 5th ruled that requests put in by chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark to reopen in New Jersey have been rejected. Judge Brian Martinotti ruled that theaters pose too much of a health risk and that it is too difficult to enforce mask rules in such dark spaces. He also mentioned that outdoor theaters like drive-ins should satiate the needs of moviegoers.
Movie theater owners are disappointed with the results of the ruling. This ruling was the result of charges that movie theater owners pressed against the state of New Jersey. Back in July, movie theater owners sued the state of New Jersey claiming that the closure of movie theaters impeded on their right to free speech. Additionally they accused the state of taking possession of their property without providing compensation. Movie theater owners were disappointed that churches were able to reopen at the time while movie theaters were not.
