When we talk about body language, we normally speak of the gestures that are made with our hands and posturing. We may even talk about the eye contact and what it says. Rarely do we speak of the lips and what they convey in the way of thought, feeling, and emotion. But rest assured that lips have a huge part in telling you what a woman is really thinking!
Lips have muscles running over, under, and around them. All of these muscles can work on their own, which means you can make tons of different gestures with your lips alone.

I know that all of my personal pictures tend to look different because I show a lot of emotion through my lips – and my feelings are normally quite clearly conveyed by the way I’ve positioned my lips.
Ready to start reading women’s lips? Following are some common lip expressions that a woman will make, what they mean, and what to do when you see them!
How To Read Women’s Lips
Tight Lipped
When you notice that a woman has a tight-lipped expression, then you can bet that tension is the emotion behind those lips. Think of when you try to pretend to smile at someone you don’t like; chances are that you are very tight-lipped instead of letting your mouth naturally open up.
The tension does not have to be anger; in fact, it doesn’t have to be negative at all! In fact, sexual tension can cause a tight-lipped expression to appear. It can also indicate nervousness, as in a potential love interest who is scared to open up to you just yet.
If a woman has tight lips around you, try to help her relax. Make her laugh. Be a calming presence to be around. Do what you have to do to release the tension.
Loose Lips
A woman who displays loose lips needs cheering up, or she needs to be left alone. A relaxed set of lips can indicate a sense of sadness or despair. For instance, a woman who has nothing left to give may let her bottom jaw relax and her lips sit apart. It’s almost as if she doesn’t have the energy to keep them together. (Also, if you watch kids who get upset you will notice that their lips open up like this.)
Of course it may also be a sign of being relaxed, focused, or bored. I find that when I’m reading something and I’m really into it, bored or not, I’ll discover that I’ve been sitting with my mouth wide open resting on my hand.
To tell the difference, look into her eyes. If her eyes look sad, then she is probably sad. If her eyes look bored or focused, then she is probably bored or focused. Act appropriately.
Biting the Lip
Biting the lip has a few different meanings, depending on the situation.
It can be caused from being nervous or excited. For instance, if a woman is nervous about your reaction to something she did, she may bit her lip.
Women all know that another woman will bite her lip around a sexy man – it just means she’s excited about being around him and she is trying to flaunt her feminine lips so that he will get excited too.
It can also be caused when self-restraint is required, as in “Bite your lip so you don’t say something you will regret!” It’s an impulse we do when we feel like saying something we shouldn’t.
It can also happen when a woman is trying to concentrate and make something happen – like paint or play video games.
So, if a woman is actively doing something while biting her lip, let her finish whatever she is concentrating on.
If a woman tells you something and then bites her lip, make sure you reassure her by making her feel good. Let her know you approve!
If you are arguing and she bites her lip – beware! She may be trying to hold back some nasty words.
Lastly, if you are having an everyday conversation (or no conversation at all) and she bites her lip – she’s into you!
Tense Lips
You know when someone is mad at you or upset about something and you see tense lips! These are the lips that are in a tight, pulled-in closed position. I often see this from my mother when she is mad about something I have said and is trying not to tell me what she thinks about the whole thing!
Tense lips also come out of disappointment.
You can tell the difference between the tense lipped position and the tight lipped position by looking for a raised eyebrow. If the eyebrow is raised, you have a tense woman on your hands.
If you see tense lips on a woman, you have probably said or done something wrong or someone else has pissed her off. Learn how to make a woman feel better and diffuse the situation the best you can.
