In most Millennials are strong minded, socially liberal, and willing to argue causes they believe in.
Millennials have made it clear that they support sex education within school districts and believe in contraception that is easily available and accessible to everyone.
More and more Millennials are using the both the IUD and hormonal implants for birth control. This makes sense because these forms of birth control are considered the golden standard in terms of efficacy of birth control.

IUD’s are low maintenance-requiring one insertion and can be easily removed when no longer needed.
There are 4 IUD’s available in the United States:
- The Paraguard or Cooper T-has been available in the United States since 1988. Once inserted it can last for 10 years. It is without any hormones. The cooper in the IUD is toxic to sperm. It makes the the uterus and the fallopian tube produce fluid that kills sperm. This fluid contains white blood cells, cooper ions, enzymes and prostaglandins
- The Mirena IUD-Mirena was introduced in the year 2000. Mirena is effective against pregnancy for 5 years. Mirena releases a small amount of levonorgestrel, a progestin hormone found in many so called “minipills. This hormone creates a barrier to sperm by thickening the cervical mucosa. It also suppresses ovulation.
- The Skyla IUD-Skyla is similar to Mirena in terms of hormone content and ways of preventing pregnancy. It became available in the United States in 2014. It is smaller in size than Mirena so it is easier to insert in nulliparous women. Skyla is effective in preventing pregnancy up to three years after insertion.
- The Liletta IUD- Liletta , like Mirena and Skyla contains levonorgestrel It’s mechanism of preventing pregnancy is the same as both Mirena and Sklya. Liletta has been available in the United States since 2015. It gained FDA approval as it was designed to be more affordable thus making it practical for women in all different socioeconomic groups.
The IUD has the lowest failure rate of any contraception on the market today. It is both affordable and simple to insert. It can act as emergency contraception when inserted after unprotected intercourse. It’s no wonder like-minded Millennials are opting for the IUD as their first line of birth control.
