With Steve Trevor back in Wonder Woman 1984, stars Chris Pine and Gal Gadot explain to Screen Rant how their roles are reversed in the sequel.
Wonder Woman 1984 is set to switch the roles between Steve Trevor and Diana Prince. Chris Pine and Gal Gadot are back to reprise their respective DCEU characters after their successful stint in 2017's Wonder Woman. They reunite with director Patty Jenkins for this year's sequel. However, if fans are expecting the same dynamic, they're up for an entirely different thing.

Set in the 1980s, Wonder Woman 1984 will find Diana at the height of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union as she fights off a brand new threat in Kristen Wiig's Barbara Ann Minerva aka Cheetah. Pedro Pascal also joins the cast, playing another villain in Maxwell Lord - a powerful businessman in the comics. As Jenkins builds on the Themysciran Princess from the first film, she also evolves her relationships, especially the one she has had with Steve. It's still unclear how the character is able to return in the sequel given his tragic fate in Wonder Woman, but the sequel's junior novelization gives the public an idea of how this might be possible.
Screen Rant was invited to the set of Wonder Woman 1984 where Pine and Gadot talked to us about what fans can expect from their characters this time. Pine reveals that his characters take on the "fish out of water" role that Diana played in the first movie. Gadot echoed her co-star's sentiments, calling it essentially a role reversal for the pair.
We got a little tease of how Steve fits into the story. What does he think of the '80s in this movie?
Chris Pine: Oh, well the first film is obviously very much Diana being a fish out of water. And then this one is fun for the audience, it's a total switch of that dynamic. So he's way less of the jaded realist in the war, the 'war pro' that he is in the first one, and this one is just, you know, boy transfixed by the wonderment of this incredible, incredible era of sophistication. And now it's Diana who's been jaded by. all of her friends have died, her love has died.
Gal Gadot: We've kind of reversed our roles.
With that in mind, we asked Gadot how that role reversal changes the dynamic in their relationship in Wonder Woman 1984. She highlighted that by the time they meet again, both have undergone changes, so they're not the same people they were the last time they met. That being said, the pair's love story will still play a big part in the narrative.
What is the dynamic between you two this time around?
Gal Gadot: You know, he's not who he used to be, she's a little different. No, it's fantastic and it's great and it's very romantic. And it comes from. it plays from a different place because Steve was her first love and the first man she ever fell in love with. And she was very young when she met him, and he kind of opened her eyes and discovered the world for her, in a way. Literally with romance and with the world itself. Now their relationship is much more mature and there's been so many longings. And it's true that you know what you had only after you lose it. I'm so tired now I can barely speak English. But yeah, that's it.
Steve and Diana's role reversal was prominent in the film's first teaser as the former looks around curiously while the latter patiently explains things that he may have not seen before. Aside from this, it's curious how else Wonder Woman 1984 will play up this new dynamic between the pair, especially considering how Diana's worldly experiences would have shaped her since Steve supposedly died in the first movie. Knowing that she's essentially immortal, she'd shied away from any human contact to protect herself from potential heartache, but with Steve back, it's clear that she's going to open herself again for him.
Regardless of their individual changes, it's safe to assume that their love story will be at the center of Wonder Woman 1984. Pine and Gadot's chemistry in the first film was so electric and was one of its strongest points, so it made sense that Jenkins is building on that. The question is, how things will work out for them this time. Fans know from contemporary DCEU movies that Diana is still mourning the loss of her beloved, so it's possible that the couple is once again headed for another heartbreaking separation.
